James Allen’s classic book. As a Man Thinketh is full of principles that produce results and happiness in a person’s life. Sadly though, life’s enduring principles have fallen victim to today’s microwave age thinking. Instead of thinking, most people would rather be told what to do. In fact, most people would rather not even do, preferring to be rewarded just for showing up. True character-based leadership, on the other hand, requires endless hours of self-examination. It forces a person to compare his actions to his stated intentions, making the needed changes in order to grow his character. The people who take shortcuts in their character development ultimately only end up shortening themselves. Jose Ortega y Gassett, in his book, Revolt of the Masses, describes the dichotomy, “The most radical division that is possible to make of humanity is that which splits it into two classes of creatures: those who make great demands on themselves, piling up difficulties and duties; and those who demand nothing special of themselves, but for whom to live is to be every moment what they already are, without imposing upon themselves any effort towards perfection; mere buoys that float on the waves.” Leaders achieve lasting greatness then, not as floating buoys, but by swimming against the current. Resolving to be different, they nurture themselves on principles not personalities, seeking the true greatness of character, not the false friendship of fame. The best way to build character and trust with others is by building trust within. Following through on one’s own deeply held principles through harmonious thinking and acting is the path to build both personal and public trust. Simply put, any person that cannot trust himself to follow through on his convictions shouldn’t be shocked when others refuse to trust his convictions also. This isn’t the work of a day, week, month, or even a year. Trust is literally built over one’s lifetime, since character is molded through the consistent study and application of a person’s principles into his life. This is why the book you are holding in your hand is so valuable, it will teach you how align your thinking and acting to fulfill your God-given potential. What are you waiting for? Turn the page and start the thinking process. — Orrin Woodward

About the Author James Allen (1864-1912) and his life are a bit of a mystery. Little is known of him, except that he was born in Leicester, England, and worked as a personal secretary for an executive of a large English corporation. In 1902, at the age of 38, he “retired” from this position to focus on his writings. He moved with his wife to a small cottage in Ilfracombe, England. He went on to write over 20 books in Ilfracombe. Of these, As a Man Thinketh was by far the most successful, despite the fact that he felt it was a minor work. As a Man Thinketh has remained in print for a century, has been translated into at least five major languages, and has influenced the lives of untold millions with its simple, powerful message. James Allen died suddenly at the age of 48.
