Starting over in a small town in northern Idaho, far from the state of Maryland, where her life had spun dangerously out of control, was appealing to young nurse, Kate Reed. New friends, a new environment, and a new job all promised to bring her life back to some semblance of normality. All she had to do was begin anew. Or was it really that simple?

Rather than taking her away from the old life, her new job as a caregiver eventually brings her face to face with her past. Her elderly patient’s body is failing her, but her spirit, spunk, and wisdom align to draw Kate into an encounter with the very events that she worked so hard to leave behind.

In the world she fled, where bad people appear good, reputations can be lost overnight, and unspeakable grief threatens to destroy, a tragedy plunged Kate into a place of torment that made flight her only option.

With the help of detective Mark Matson, her new patient’s grandson, the Maryland event that turned Kate’s life upside down begins to take on even more sinister connotations. It is only when Kate is willing to return and confront her past, once again putting herself in grave danger, that she finds herself on a path toward the truth that will ultimately free her.

Harsh reality and a gripping pace keep the reader involved in a tale of buried truths and lies exposed.

About the Author Carol AuClair describes herself as a “lover of words”. From her early childhood days in Tucson, Arizona, to her current life in Arizona, southern California and northern Idaho, this has been one constant in her life. She discovered the joy and thrill of writing stories in the third grade and has been expressing that love of words in various ways since then.

Painting, drawing and writing were always vying for time and attention as she loved each of them. Graduating from the University of Arizona with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Secondary Art Education and a minor in English, her first career was teaching art and English, marrying both of her passions.

She and her husband welcomed two children in the late 1970’s while living in Everett, Washington and Carol quit her teaching to devote full time to raising their family. It was during this time that she began her first novel (which remains unfinished in the bottom of a drawer!). When time permitted she continued to write and in 1984 she was awarded the Julia Collier Award for Juvenile Fiction at the Deep South Regional Writer’s Conference in Lafayette, Louisiana.

In 1985, while living in New Orleans, she and her husband started a business which grew over the years to eight hundred employees in twenty-one cities. The nature of the business caused them to relocate to northern Virginia. Still, she continued to write. In January of 1999, her husband of twenty-eight years was killed while piloting his small plane, ending their dreams of growing old together. Carol ran their business for another two years before selling it and returning to Tucson. Almost three years later, she married her current husband, Mick, and he introduced her to the beauty of northern Idaho, where they spend their summers. It was there that she penned her debut novel, A Bridge to Justice. Her time had come.

Escaping into the lives of characters, whether her own or those created by others, has remained her favorite pastime. Years of writers’ groups, writers’ conferences and book clubs have fed her love for the written word. She especially enjoys the power that the characters in novels have, to speak to the hearts and minds of the reader with their life experiences and the decisions that they make.
